rover/mg common faults
All Rovers built after 1993
The main problem with Rover systems is the position of the ECU, right next to the ignition coil. This causes problems if the wronge grade of spark plug is fitted this will blow the ECU and cause high reving/hesitations and engine stalling.
The ECU can often hold the main relay on after the ignition has been switched off and drain the battery over night. The only fix is to replace the ECU.
Rover
Later rovers are a very good buy due to the fact that the diesels were powered by there parent company BMW.
We have all heard of the K-series engines in the rover 200/400 series rover which was also fitted to the freelander and mg sports(head gasket failure)apparently caused by steel through bolts fitted to a aluminium head.
You can purchase cheaply a very nice rover with a Honda engine 1.6/2.0 recognised by the pulley is located on the right hand side of the car as you lift the bonnet, and not on the left like the rover.
